Sometimes we may come across a piece of furniture that may look like it should be tossed aside. However, I’m here to show you that that is not always the case. Take this vintage French Provincial desk that I was given, for instance. My friend gave it to me with it needing much TLC. Game on, I say!
STEP 1
If you look close, you'll see a broken drawer pull, chipped up paint, and a sort of jerry-rigged panel fixed to the back to hold the legs on to the rest. Those are all things that can be fixed.
STEP 2
First, I take off the back panel to assess what needs done to repair the leg side of the desk. Thankfully, it was something I felt I could tackle by using my Kreg Jig to add pocket holes to a board brace.
STEP 3
Then, before I move onto paint, I had to get the surfaces prepped. To do that, I used my sander to take off the layers of paint on the desk top. I found the top to be made of laminate, which is a good thing because it’s durable, AND it can be painted. See my past tutorial HERE.
STEP 4
Next, it’s time for paint. I bring out my Large Spray Shelter, and my Super Finish Max. These tools are the ultimate for a DIYer. They are not only, space-saving, but also so easy to use. To begin, I start with a stain/odor blocking primer.
STEP 5
Next, after the primer cures, I apply two coats of a white paint, letting cure in between. For reference, you can see my video tutorial how to set up the Super Finish Max Sprayer HERE. Feel free to practice with the sprayer nozzle positions and spray intensity on cardboard or scrap wood. Focus on using your elbow and shoulder as opposed to just your wrist. Begin by spraying before you hit your surface and continue off of it. This process will help you get the pristine finish you’re after.
Within 10 minutes of spraying I have one coat of paint on. woot! The best part, surprisingly, is cleanup is easy and done in the same amount of time as well.
STEP 6
Not only did the desk get the lovin’ it needs, so did the chair I found at the thrift store. The lines were perfect to what I was after. In addition, the upholstery change-up is going to make a huge change in the appearance too.
STEP 7
However, before I call my desk set finished, I first want to add a texture and depth. First, I add a furniture transfer with roses and French typography. Next, I create stripes on the sides to mimic the linen upholstery I’m adding to the chair. Then, I use a dark gray wax to soften the white paint, and also highlight corners and crevices. However, I also add a touch of distressing for a time-worn story.
STEP 8
After my efforts are complete, I now have a beautiful desk set that looks nothing like the original. Whew! I couldn’t be happier with the outcome as it now suits the style the furniture was intended to be…French Provincial.
The little touches I add are what make this a story-telling piece. Not only does the graphic gives it interest, but also the soft, feminine paint colors. The upholstery is definitely the cherry on top. Wouldn’t you agree?
It only took time and a little DIY know-how. Are feeling inspired to tackle your very own project piece? There’s no limit when it comes to creating your own home story. You most certainly can do it DIY style!
